Eating in a shorter time window may help older adults keep their thinking skills sharp
A small study found that older women who ate only within a nine-hour window did better on some thinking tests than those who ate over a longer period, even though both groups lost the same amount of weight.
Many older adults worry about their memory and thinking skills. Scientists want to help people stay sharp as they get older. A new study looked at eating habits and the brain. Researchers led by Prof Sue Shapses at Rutgers University did this work. They worked with 47 women aged 50 to 79. All the women were overweight or had obesity. The study lasted for six months. Every woman cut 500 calories from her daily food. One group ate only in a nine-hour window, usually from 10am to 6pm. The other group ate over about 12 hours. Both groups lost about 7kg of weight. But the nine-hour group did better on some brain tests. They were stronger at spatial planning and problem-solving. They also made fewer errors on memory tests. There was no difference in reaction time. Dementia is a serious problem around the world. It causes nearly 2 million deaths each year. Experts say lifestyle changes can help prevent many cases. Obesity in middle age raises dementia risk by 30%. This study suggests that when you eat may matter for your brain. It may help older adults keep their thinking skills sharp. More research is needed to learn more.
