Can Regenerative Farming Boost Nutrient Levels in Food?

Researchers are studying if regenerative agriculture can reverse the decline in nutrient levels in crops by improving soil health.

Scientists are investigating whether regenerative farming can improve the nutrient levels in our food. Recent studies show that the nutritional value of many crops has declined over the past few decades. Researchers from the University of Lincoln, led by Francesca Brkic, examined this issue by comparing products from regenerative and conventional farms. Their findings suggest that regenerative practices, which focus on rebuilding soil health and biodiversity, may significantly increase nutrient density in crops.

Data from the USDA in the late 1990s revealed that vitamin C in lemons dropped by almost a third, calcium in carrots fell by more than a quarter, and vitamin A in bananas decreased by 57% over 22 years. Wheat mineral content has also declined by 20-30% since the 1960s. Brkic’s team found that regenerative farms, which avoid ploughing and pesticides, produced crops with up to 22 times more iron in kale, eight times more selenium in dried peas, and up to 20,000 times more folate in carrots compared to conventional farms.

Dr David Montgomery, a US geologist, argues that regenerative practices restore soil microbes, which help plants absorb nutrients. A 2015 review by Newcastle University found that organic foods provided extra antioxidants equivalent to one to two additional portions of fruit and vegetables. However, other reviews by UK, French, and Stanford agencies noted that differences in nutrient levels were sometimes small or inconsistent.

Critics raise concerns about the cost-effectiveness and scalability of regenerative agriculture. Dr Naheed Ali warns of 'dietary displacement,' where people might eat less food believing it is more nutritious. Prof Ken Giller, a soil scientist, doubts that regenerative farming can reliably feed the world’s 8.3 billion people. Despite these challenges, the research highlights the importance of soil health in improving the nutritional value of staple foods.

As the global population grows, finding sustainable ways to enhance food nutrition becomes increasingly urgent. Regenerative agriculture offers a promising approach, but its widespread adoption will require careful consideration of economic and practical factors. The debate continues as scientists, farmers, and policymakers work to balance food security with environmental and nutritional goals.
