Cities Plant More Trees to Cool Hot Streets
Many cities plant trees to lower street heat and help people walk outside in summer.
Urban heat islands form when dense buildings and dark pavement store sunlight and release it slowly at night. To reduce this effect, city planners are expanding street-tree programs along busy roads and school routes. Mature canopies can cut surface temperatures, improve walking comfort, and slightly support cleaner air. Success depends on more than planting day: soil quality, watering in the first years, and protecting trunks from cars all matter. When cooler routes connect parks, shops, and homes, outdoor life becomes easier during extreme summer weeks.
