NASA Finds Rare Black Hole Eating a Star Far From Galaxy Center
NASA's Swift Observatory saw a rare event where a black hole far outside a galaxy's core tore apart a star, helping scientists find more wandering black holes.
NASA scientists have discovered a rare black hole that is eating a star far from the center of its galaxy. This unusual event was observed by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, which has been watching the universe for more than twenty years. The discovery is important because black holes that wander away from galactic centers are very difficult to find. Usually, astronomers only see these events in the crowded cores of galaxies.
The event was first flagged in November 2025 by the Zwicky Transient Facility at Palomar Observatory. An artificial intelligence algorithm helped identify the sudden flare of light. They confirmed that a supermassive black hole, which weighs about one million times the mass of the Sun, was tearing apart a nearby star. This process is called a tidal disruption event.

During the event, the black hole radiated with the light of about ten billion suns. Swift measured the temperature of the material at about 54,000 degrees Fahrenheit. They noted that while Swift is currently waiting for an orbit boost, future searches will use data from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and NASA's upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.
