Algae Blooms Close Lakes in Northern Ireland
Blue-green algae blooms have closed lakes in Northern Ireland, causing health warnings and hurting local businesses.
Blue-green algae grows in many lakes in Northern Ireland. This algae makes the water look green and thick. It can be bad for people and animals. The UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology found 248 algae blooms in the water systems. 80 blooms appeared in June and July 2024. This is a big problem for the summer.
Camlough Lake and Craigavon Lakes are two affected places. The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs sent a warning on 13 July. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council put up warning signs at Camlough Lake. Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council stopped swimming and watersports at Craigavon Lakes on 21 July. People cannot swim or play in the water now.
Karl Toner owns a business at Camlough Lake. He says visitors are much fewer now. His business loses money because of the lake closure. Joanne Callan is an open-water swimmer. She says the closures hurt swimmers physically, emotionally, and socially. Rachel and Tilly Turkington are visitors. They do not enter Craigavon Lakes because of the water quality.
Scientists say phosphorus causes the algae growth. Phosphorus comes from farms, wastewater, septic tanks, industry, and household detergents. Lough Neagh sediment holds about 40 years of phosphorus. Councils test the water every day for toxins. They want to keep people safe. There are no quick fixes. Reducing nutrient pollution is the first step to solve the problem.
