Algae Blooms Close Lakes in Northern Ireland

Blue-green algae blooms have closed lakes in Northern Ireland, causing health warnings and hurting local businesses.

Blue-green algae blooms have appeared across Northern Ireland's water systems this summer. These thick green layers can be dangerous for people and animals. Because of the health risks, several lakes have been closed or restricted. The closures affect local visitors, swimmers, and businesses that depend on summer tourism.

The UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology reported 248 algae blooms across Lough Neagh and other water systems. About 80 of these blooms were confirmed in June and July alone. Camlough Lake near Newry and Craigavon Lakes were among the affected areas. On 13 July, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (Daera) told Newry, Mourne and Down District Council that algae had appeared at Camlough Lake. Warning signs were put up quickly to protect the public.

On 21 July, Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council suspended swimming and watersports at Craigavon Lakes. Councils are now monitoring water conditions every day and testing for toxins. Karl Toner, a business owner at Camlough Lake, said visitor numbers fell sharply after the warning. Open-water swimmer Joanne Callan said the closures affect swimmers physically, emotionally, and socially. Visitors Rachel and Tilly Turkington said they avoid entering Craigavon Lakes because of the poor water quality.

Scientists say the main cause is nutrient pollution, especially phosphorus. This nutrient can come from agriculture, wastewater, septic tanks, industry, and household detergents. Lough Neagh sediment contains about 40 years' worth of phosphorus. When warm weather and extra nutrients meet, algae can grow quickly. Authorities say there are no quick fixes, but reducing nutrient pollution is the first step to solving the problem.

The situation matters because algae can cause skin irritation and sickness in people and animals. It also reduces tourism and local business income. Recreational activities such as swimming and watersports are restricted while officials work to improve water quality. For now, the public should follow warning signs and avoid contact with affected lakes.
