The young man, known as R.K.C., claimed that social media platforms caused him addiction and harm. His case was scheduled to go to trial next week in Los Angeles, but it has now been withdrawn. This decision comes after R.K.C. settled similar claims against other companies like TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube.

R.K.C. argued that features like infinite scroll and autoplay made him use the apps compulsively. He said this caused anxiety and sleep problems. However, Meta stated that the claims were baseless. A company spokeswoman told the BBC that R.K.C. received no payment for dropping the case. His lawyers explained that he wants to focus on his recovery and therapy instead of a long jury trial.

This case is part of a larger legal trend in the United States. The Los Angeles Superior Court is overseeing hundreds of similar lawsuits against social media companies. Across the country, there are thousands of lawsuits accusing platforms of harming young children. In a previous trial, a jury found Meta and YouTube liable for harming a young woman's mental health.
