Teenager Drops Social Media Addiction Lawsuit Against Meta

A fifteen-year-old teenager from Florida, known only as R.K.C., has dropped his lawsuit against Meta. The young man had claimed that social media platforms, such as Instagram, caused him addiction and serious harm. His case was scheduled to go before a jury in the Los Angeles Superior Court next week, but it has now been withdrawn.

R.K.C. had previously settled similar claims against other major platforms, including TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube. His lawyers, Emily Jeffcott and Rahul Ravipudi, explained that he wants to focus on his recovery and therapy. They also noted concerns about the stress of a long jury trial. R.K.C. had argued that features like infinite scroll and autoplay drove compulsive use, leading to anxiety and sleep deprivation.

Meta stated that the claims were baseless. A spokeswoman told the BBC that R.K.C. received no payment for dropping the lawsuit. The company maintains that its platforms are safe and that the allegations are without merit.

This case is part of a larger legal trend where social media companies are being sued for allegedly harming children. The Los Angeles Superior Court is overseeing hundreds of similar lawsuits. A small number of these cases have been selected to go to trial, with the next one set to begin in October. Across the US, there are thousands of lawsuits accusing Meta and other major social media platforms of harming young children.

In a previous trial, a jury found Meta and YouTube liable for harming a young woman's mental health and ordered them to pay six million dollars in damages. Both Meta and YouTube have appealed that previous verdict. In May, Meta settled for an undisclosed amount with a school district that sued it for negatively impacting students and incurring welfare costs. A New Mexico judge also told Meta to pay three hundred and seventy-five million dollars for misleading users on platform safety.

The dropping of R.K.C.'s case does not end the broader legal battle. It highlights the ongoing debate about the responsibility of tech companies in protecting young users. As more cases move forward, the courts will continue to examine the impact of social media on mental health and well-being.
